Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Authorities and stakeholders in Gulu district have launched a task force to improve education performance.
The “Education Taskforce’’ comprises school headteachers, chairpersons school management committees (SMC), teachers associations, opinion leaders, educationists as well as local and national leaders. The force is headed by David Obol, the Gulu district inspector of schools.
The intervention follows Tuesday’s launch of a rapid assessment of the education sector by the district education department which discovered challenges and irregularities, poor performance with less than 100 candidates attaining first grade in the schools over the past years.
Obol, the Gulu district inspector of schools and chairperson of the education taskforce says that the survey discovered staff shortage, high school dropouts, lack of menstrual hygiene facilities, poor management, absenteeism, and poor performances in several schools.
The task force will often conduct school visits, arrange meetings with stakeholders, mobilize to support development in schools, monitor and evaluate the performance of school authorities and teachers and make recommendations for actions from the district.
While meeting at Ajulu Primary School in Patiko sub county on Wednesday, the task force members from the forty-seven government-aided primary schools in Gulu district signed and committed to undertake all activities to improve education and performance in the district effective this year.
Simon Wokorach, the Aswa County Member of Parliament in Gulu district who is also part of the education task force told URN that the initiative seeks to support girl-child education and address challenges that affect them while and outside schools.
Ballington P’Ongwec, the councilor for Bungatira sub county who is also a class teacher says that the need for improving education performance requires joint support for teachers and learners noting that the cost of living has gone so high.
Jinaro Okot, the Headteacher of Palaro Primary School says everyone should play a role in ensuring that education performance is improved in the district and country at large.
