Gulu University reschedules exams for census

Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Gulu University management has rescheduled its second-semester examination schedules to allow an early break-off for the national census.

The move comes on the heels of the Education Ministry directive to all schools and Higher learning institutions to release their staff and learners to take part in the National Census in May this year.

The government is set to conduct the National Population and Housing Census 2024 starting on May 10 this year. The exercise will take 10 days and end on May 19, 2024.

Dr. Jerry Bagaya, the Gulu University Academic Registrar in an April 4 circular noted that the second-semester examination has been rescheduled to start on April 22 and end on May 7 this year.

“The Academic Registrar informs all staff and students that the chairperson, acting on behalf of the University Senate, has upheld the recommendations of the Quality Assurance, Timetable and Examinations Committee to reschedule examinations for semester II 2023/2024 Academic year to start on April 2 and end on May 7, 2024,” The Circular reads in parts.

According to Sr. Bagaya, the decision was occasioned by the directive from the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Sports to have all students released to participate in the National Population and Housing Census.

He however noted that the schedule for other academic activities, including recess term and school practices won’t be affected.

James Ojok Onono, Gulu University Public Relations Officer told Uganda Radio Network in an interview Friday that examinations were to start on April 27 adding that the one-week adjustment won’t heavily affect the students.

The government has so far undertaken five population Censuses in the post-independence period with the most recent being the 2014 National Census.
