The High Court in Kampala has opened a five-day special criminal session for 50 capital offenders seeking to be released on bail pending trial.
Among the suspects is jailed Nakawa Municipality MP Michael Kabaziguruka who is facing treachery charges before the army court. He is set to appear before Justice Yasin Nyanzi on Thursday October 13.
Another suspect is a Makerere University professor Christopher Bakuneta who is accused of raping his student.
Bakuneta, appeared before Justice Nyanzi on Monday and presented three sureties who are his long time friends, saying the court should release him on a non-cash bail because he has spent 5 months on remand at Luzira prison without pay.
The same court has also set October 12 to hear another application filed by Ruhinda County MP, Rtd Capt Donozio Kahonda seeking orders to suspend criminal proceedings that were instituted against him before Jinja Magistrate court in last year.
Kahonda is accused of forgery and uttering false documents at the Military Academy in Jinja district in November 2001.
Other suspects who have applied to be released on bail are facing charges of murder, aggravated defilement and robbery. They have told court that they have spent more than three years on remand without appearing before a judge for trial.
The session ends this Friday when Justice Nyanzi will consider whether to grant temporary freedom to the 50 suspects.
