Hoima, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Hoima district has secured 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine from Kagadi district.
Last week, Hoima district ran out of the COVID-19 vaccines prompting health officials in the district to seek help from Kagadi district that had not fully utilized their doses. In March, Hoima district received 5,230 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
Dr Lawrence Tumusiime, the Hoima District Health Officer- DHO says that the vaccines from Kagadi will help them fill the gap as they wait for more doses from the health ministry.
Tumusiime says they are overwhelmed by the increasing number of people turning up to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
According to Tumusiime, they receive 500 to 700 people daily in need of vaccination, unlike in the past months when the number was less than 100 people per day.
The vaccination points in Hoima are at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, Kigorobya Health Center IV, Bujumbura Health Center III, Buseruka Health Center III, Mparangasi Health Center III, Azur Health Center IV and Kabaale Health Center III among others.
Last week, most health facilities including Hoima Regional Referral Hospital had run out of the vaccine, despite receiving a big number of people in need of vaccination.
Hoima is one of the districts that were hit hard by the increasing number of COVID-19 patients following the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020.
George Gulyentonda, the Kagadi District Communications Officer says that they have remained with 610 doses.
Uganda launched the COVID-19 vaccination program on March 10, 2021.
Last month, the Ministry of Health announced that the country had entered the second wave of COVID-19 infections.
