Mpigi, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Queen of Peace High School in Muge village, Nkozi sub county, Mpigi district has received a boost of 10 laptop computers and a generator, thanks to Humans Care Foundation.
The donation valued at Shillings 50 million is meant to aid E-learning and equip learners with Information and Communication Technology-ICT skills.
While receiving the donation on Wednesday, the head teacher, Philomena Namirembe revealed that they have been transporting learners to the nearby town for computer practicals due to the lack of electricity and inadequate computers.
Prior to the donation, the school had two computers serving more than 50 learners in each class. The abridged curriculum makes ICT studies compulsory.
Namirembe revealed that with the new computers, they will also introduce a program for the community. “Now that the school has got some computers, we are going to introduce a program for the community so that the parents who want to get computer knowledge can study for free,” Namirembe stated.
Mandy Ssibuliddwa, a teacher at the school said the new computers will help their learners to carry out more research under the ICT-integrated curriculum. He, however, pleaded with the government to connect their village to the national grid to enable them to put the new computers to better use.
Joseph Kabiriizi, one of the parents and the Muge village LC1 chairperson said that they have written severally to their members of parliament and other relevant authorities about the power problem in vain.
Kabiriizi revealed that although electricity is just a few kilometers away from their community, it has failed to reach them for years.
Patrick Kasumba, the Bujenje municipality legislator revealed that parliament approved more funding to the Energy and Mineral Development Ministry to ensure that rural areas get electricity.
