Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has developed a strategic plan to ensure that accountants play transformational roles in the communities.
The plan says accountants should demonstrate their relevance in communities other than only keeping books of accounts.
During the opening of the 12th Certified Public Accountants economic forum at Entebbe on Wednesday, Josephine Okui Ossiya the president of the Institute of Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) part of the strategy is to have regional networks.
She said the regional networks will serve as one of the avenues to impact the communities through the development of professional accountancy schools. Accountants are also expected to participate in issues that affect the communities to cause transformation.
Ossiya accountants are on an intentional drive to address issues of affordable electricity, education, and corruption among others that affect productivity in the country.
She explained that the best way to achieve their objectives was by bringing together accountants and other professionals to discuss policy matters affecting the economy and the communities.
Joseph Enyimu, the commissioner of Economic Development Policy and Research at the Ministry of Finance Planning and Economic Development said that accountants help in the audit function of government to establish and confirm the commitments the country makes are achieved.
He said the government is trying to attract private equity into the economy which requires credibility in the running of the businesses in the country.
Enyimu said productivity among sectors is not uniform across sectors saying that it is lowest in agricultural because of a lack of available markets for the agricultural produce in the country.
The government has continually emphasized the promotion of productive sectors such as agriculture, industry, and services through the national development plans which have proven to be potential generators of household income and employment opportunities.
The areas selected for policy debate at the economic forum include vocational education empowering the youth, public debt management and its impact on the economy, and the impact of corruption and fraud on the economy among others.
During this edition of the economic forum, the participants include accountants, tax consultants, economists, policymakers, and investment experts among others. The 3-day event will run under the theme “Enhancing the productivity sectors for sustainable development”.
