ICPAU releases October examination results showing better performance

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | On Oct.27, the Chairperson of the Public Accountants Examinations Board, Geoffrey Byamugisha and Derrick Nkaja, the CEO of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda and other officials released the October 2021 examination results.

“We are grateful to the Ministry of Education and Sports for granting us permission to conduct the examinations in October 2021. We can attest that the standard operating procedures were followed to the letter,” Byamugisha said.

Whereas 5,640 students had registered to sit for examinations in June 2021, the number had reduced to 5,151 by the time we conducted the examinations in October 2021, representing a withdrawal of 489 students. The examinations were conducted for a period of five days from October 4 – 8 at seven examinations centres; in Arua, Fort Portal, Gulu, Kampala, Mbale, Mbarara, and Nkozi.

A total of 4,238 candidates attempted the October 2021 examinations compared to 4,453 in December 2020 and 6,516 in November 2019, representing a drop of approximately 35% from the pre-COVID-19 diet of November 2019.

A total of 140 candidates sat for accounting technicians diploma compared to 151 in December 2020 and 225 in November 2019. The average pass rate of 60% is significantly higher compared to 45.5% in December 2020 and 43.3% in November 2019.

In addition, a total of 72 candidates sat for certified tax advisor examinations for the period under review. The average pass rate of 54.6% is significantly higher compared to 41.2% in December 2020 and 45.7% in November 2019.

For certified public accountants (CPA) examinations, a total of 4,026 candidates sat for the October 2021 exams compared to 4,244 in December 2020 and 6,181 in November 2019. The average pass rate improved from 31.2% in November 2019 and 32.2% in December 2020 to 36.4% in October 2021. The longer period to prepare for examinations may have contributed to the improvement in performance, officials said.
