Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Overt thirty golfers, including an entry from Sweden, will be vying for the biggest prize at the Uganda Golf Club Ladies Open that tees off Thursday to October 7, at the par 72 Kitante course in Kampala.
According to a statement from the club, 34 lady golfers are playing in the main category that includes two time winner Martha Babirye (2019 & 2021 ) and last year’s winner, Toro Club Lady Captain Peace Amooti Kabasweka
“I have been working on my all round game and am looking forward to the action on the course,” Kabasweka said in an interview. “It’s good to be back this is an important tournament to me and want to win this as I eye the Uganda Ladies Open, which I have never won. I would say am competing with myself and the course- that is what is my mindset.”
Kabasweka, has recently returned to form, winning the Namulonge Ladies Open and also playing impressively in the Singleton Match Play Challenge with her partner Shiela Kesiime.
The tournament is a build up to the Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Open due from October 12-14. It is a moment for the lady golfers to test the course that has been getting a lot of pampering from course workers.
Babirye, a two time winner is also one to watch. “It’s a great tournament for me and am taking it simple and looking forward to my first tee shot,” Babirye said. “It’s me and the course and that is how it is.”
The golfer recently won the Coast Open in Mombasa, Kenya and has been consistent in the run up to this tournament. She also riding on her being voted Uganda Sports Press Association lady golfer of the year 2022 together with 2018 winner Irene Nakalembe, who is now playing as a professional.
Meron Kyomugisha, winner of the Toro Ladies Open will also be another golfer to watch out for as many golfers eye the East Africa golf Challenge Trophy later this month in Kigali, Rwanda.
Other notable lady golfers to watch out for are Eva Magala, Gloria Mbaguta, Judith Komugisha, Shiela Kesiime, Lillian Koowe.
Sponsor NCBA Bank Uganda will be offering assortment of prizes for various winners. Other co sponsors are Crown Beverages who will refresh the players through the tournament, Emin Pasha Hotel, Fairway Hotel, Gorilla Heights Lodge and Case Medical Services.
There is a Tuk Tuk staked on Hole 9 for any golfer who sinks an ace.
