Kapchorwa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda’s renowned long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei, has expanded his support to football in the Sebei Sub-region, aiming to identify and empower youth talent beyond athletics. In an exclusive interview with Uganda Radio Network, the world and Olympic Champion expressed his belief that the youth in the region can excel not only in athletics but also in football.

He emphasized the need to provide support to talented footballers, offering them exposure and opportunities to showcase their potential. “I started my sports career with football before joining athletics, and am hopeful that we are going to identify talent in football just as we are doing in athletics,” he said.

“I am sure that, by the end of this drive, we shall be able to get some gifted youth who will future in the Uganda Football National team,” he added. Through his foundation, the Joshua Cheptegei Development Foundation (JOCDEF), the inaugural football tournament is scheduled for December 24th and 25th at his stadium in Teryet, Kapchorwa District.

This event will host eight teams from Kapchorwa Municipality, with plans to expand participation as the initiative progresses. “I also look forward to having my football team that will be registered with the Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA),” he said.

Hasadi Mamudu, Chairperson of the Kapchorwa Football Association, pledged support for the project, acknowledging its significance in enhancing football within the district. “This opportunity has come at the time when it’s needed most and thanks Joshua Cheptegei for the golden heart,” said Mamudu.

Timothy Musani Chelangat, a promising footballer, acknowledged the tournaments’ role not only in talent discovery but also in keeping the youth engaged, and active, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Historically, the Sebei Sub-region has faced challenges in football tournaments like “The Drum,” resulting in underwhelming performances. Cheptegei’s initiative aims to bolster football development in the region, providing a platform for aspiring footballers to flourish.
