Kikuube, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Joshua Sunday, a resident of Kyakajaka village in Ruguse parish, Bugambe sub-county, is in custody at Kikuube Central Police Station for allegedly beheading his 2-year-old daughter, Angel Murungi. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon around 1 p.m.

According to information gathered by Uganda Radio Network (URN), Sunday reportedly picked up a machete and attacked his daughter, later leaving her body inside their home for unknown reasons. Phinias Neba Isingoma, the area LC1 Chairperson, informed URN that the child’s mother was away tending to the garden at the time of the incident.

He recounted that neighbors heard the child screaming for help and rushed to the house, only to find her lying dead in a pool of blood with her head severed. Isingoma stated that residents pursued Sunday and successfully apprehended him. He was subsequently handed over to the Bugambe police post, which quickly transferred him to Kikuube Central Police Station.

The motive behind Sunday’s brutal act remains unknown. Margret Butali, a resident, speculated that the couple may have been experiencing domestic disturbances, which could have led Sunday to commit such a heinous act. Edson Murungi, another resident, expressed shock at the incident and called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed that police recovered the machete used in the alleged murder. He stated that once investigations are completed, Sunday will be arraigned in court to face murder charges. The police have taken the child’s body to Kikuube Health Center IV mortuary for a postmortem examination before handing it over to the family for burial.
