Kabale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kabale Municipality authorities have started evicting roadside vendors following the directive of Local Government Minister, Raphael Magyezi.
During his visit last week to preside over the fresh verification of vendors and allocation of lockups in Kabale Central Market, Magyezi ordered the eviction of all roadside vendors from the streets of Kabale town. Magyezi also ordered Kabale Municipal authorities to start collecting revenue from vendors operating from Kabale central market effective next month.
Magyezi issued the orders after Justin Barekye, the Kabale Municipality Town Clerk revealed that the municipality has lost about 1.6 billion Shillings in revenue after vendors who operate from Kabale Central Market were yet to start paying while others continued to operate from roadsides.
But, the operation has sparked anger among affected vendors. Oscar Tugumisirize, and Moreen Tumwijukye, the affected roadside vendors say that authorities should have issued a prior notification rather than surprise them with an eviction.
Frank Ensinikweri alias Salongo and Moses Twakiire accuse municipal council authorities of bias during the eviction. They say law enforcement officers evict and chase some vendors and leave others to operate.
Moses Ahimbisibwe, Principal Assistant Town Clerk for Central Division says that in addition to Minister Magyezi’s directive, the operation is aimed at reviving the Keep Kabale Clean campaign.
