Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has donated Iftar food hampers to various Muslim groups including parliamentary staff, police officers, journalists and clerics among others.

The hampers comprise five kilogrammes of rice and maize flour respectively, three litres of cooking oil, two packets of spaghetti and Pilau masala.

According to the Clerk to Parliament, Jane Kibirige, the beneficiaries include 108 journalists, 39 parliamentary staff, 24 police officers and 20 support staff among others.

Speaking during the handover of the food hampers, Kadaga explained that they decided to offer the food hampers this time instead of hosting the Iftar dinner which happens each holy month of Ramadhan because of the current lockdown aimed at stemming the spread of coronavirus.

Sadab Kitatta, one of the leaders of Muslim journalists at Parliament welcomed the food hamper donation saying many of their members were affected by the lockdown.

He explained that they initially mobilised through the Muslim Journalists Taqaddum Sacco to support their members some of whom had been laid off from work.

Asked whether getting the Iftar gift hampers won’t compromise their independence as journalists, Kitatta said the Speaker’s support to the Muslim community is unconditional.

He also noted that most of the beneficiaries are in up-country locations and don’t cover parliament.
