Kalangala Infrastructure Services (KIS) is set to commence construction of the four project components say; road rehabilitation, electricity generation and construction of transmission lines, construction of the second ferry and water supply construction on Bugala Island in Kalangala district.
KIS’s Managing Director John Opiro, says the $50m (sh135bn) project funding were concluded in December last year. He says ground breaking for road and power components is to take effect in March this year and that construction of the second ferry in Kisumu has started.
“We are very grateful to government and all the funders,” Opiro says. “Now we are ready to start.”
The funding has been met by UK’s firm InfraCo Ltd, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) of South Africa, Uganda Development Corporation (UDC), Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF), Nedbank Ltd, USAID and GuarantCO.
State minister for trade David Wandendeya Wakikona says the government of Uganda started on the project in 2005 to ensure that the Island is connected to the social service centres like health, schools, ICTs among others. The minister says these projects will pull down poverty and unemployment levels on the island and ultimately improve on the people’s welfare.
The project will also support BIDCO’s oil palm project based on the same island.
