Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Members of Parliament have expressed fear that the attacks that rocked Kampala early today, could have been targeting the Parliament building, the police and other government installations in the area.
One of the explosions occurred at the IPS building near parliament and the other at the quarter guard of the Central Police Station in Kampala.
The IPS building where the blast occurred is strategically located next to Parliament, Queens Chambers, where MPs offices are located, City Hall, The Office of the Inspector General of Government, the Ministry of ICT, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and the Uganda Prisons headquarters among others.
Bulambuli County MP Isaac Katenya says that the terrorists could have targeted MPs by bombing areas surrounding their offices. He observes a need to heighten the security of the area.
Similarly, Jonathan Ebwalu, the Soroti City West MP says the choice of the scene was deliberate.
Busia Municipality MP Geoffrey Macho was in shock and called for more vigilance by security and the general public.
Manjiya County MP John Baptist Nambeshe recalls that the explosion sent a wave of panic and tension amongst legislators.
Meanwhile, Katerera County MP Muhammad Kato was dismayed by the response of the security, saying they arrived much later than expected. He says that the police officers at the scene were shy to respond swiftly forcing well-wishers to try and help the injured, citing one man who was down injured.
Parliament was suspended indefinitely in relation to the attacks.
