Kanungu imposes total ban on sand mining after second victim is buried alive

All sand mining sites in Kanungu have been temporarily closed prior to issuing of regulatory measures at the sand quarries.

Kanungu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Sand mining activities all over Kanungu district have been banned following the death of a second person in a quarry. Both victims whose deaths have come close to each other were buried alive under an avalanche of tons of sand in different quarrying sites.

This economic activity has been employing many people in the district, meaning that the closure will affect the wellbeing and standards of living of many families.

Gad Ahimbisibwe Rugaju, the Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner said that all sand mines in the district will remain closed until standard sand mining measures are put in place.

Rugaju added that the latest incident at Kiruruma sand quarry when a 37 year old man was buried alive on Good Friday, has left authorities with no option but to temporarily close the sand mines.

The Good Friday incident comes barely two weeks after a Senior two student was also buried alive at Kanyamisinga sand quarry in Katete sub county also in Kanungu district.

According to a statement issued on Easter Monday, the Security Committee says that the office of the RDC will put in place regulatory measures at the sand quarries to ensure that no more lives are lost.

The Deputy RDC noted the closure of sand mines will last for as long as it takes the security committee to sensitize the communities about the safe sand mining practices and ensuring that regulations put in place are followed.

Kanungu district is well known for quality sand that is used by many builders in the districts of Kigezi sub-region.
