Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police have slapped charges of unlawful assembly against 40 people picked up during protests against the arrest of Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the Kyadondo East Member of Parliament on Monday.
The suspects were picked up in running battles with police following the botched consultative meeting of Kyagulanyi that was scheduled to take place at Our lady of Good Counsel in Gayazi on his presidential ambitions.
Police blocked the meeting on grounds that the legislators has failed to comply with the Public Order Management Act and some of the conditions set for the meeting.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, says a total of 45 people were picked up including MPs Robert Kyagulanyi, Asuman Basalirwa and Latif Ssebagala.
According to Onyango, much as the MPs and two others were released on police bond, 40 other suspects are still in police custody pending their appearance in court.
He however, says they will screen the suspects to select only those that were involved in the chaos and pelted stones at vehicles, police officers, blocked roads and burnt tyres.
According to Onyango, the Officer in Charge of Operations at Kasangati police station, ASP Andrew Angume who was injured by a stray teargas canister fired by his juniors during the chaos has since been transferred to Iran-Uganda Friendship hospital at Naguru.
On Monday, Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga said police blocked Kyagulanyi’s consultative meeting because it had turned into a political rally.
He insisted that a consultative meeting cannot be in a playground.
He also noted that Kyagulanyi had failed to provide ambulances, ushers, toilets and firefighting equipment as required.
