Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kasese Municipality Councillors have asked the government to give a special grant to the district a year after it was ravaged by floods.
The councillors say several revenue sources that included open markets near river Nyamwamba, Kilembe mines factory among other avenues were destroyed by last year’s floods.
Alfred Ikwera the leader of opposition in the municipal council says there is a need for a special grant so that the district can cover up some of the financial wounds that were created by the disaster.
He says many businesses including farming activities were affected and farmers were displaced from their gardens.
Ikwera says the situation was worsened further by the Covid-19 lockdown that has greatly suffocated businesses.
Sebastian Tumusiime a councillor representing Nyakasanga II ward says that in the last year, they collected only 400 Million Shillings out of the planned 1.3 Billion Shillings.
Tumusiime is concerned that the municipality may not realize its annual plans unless government extends financial support.
The Nyamwamba Division councillor Tadeo Muhindo says the absence of revenues will not only affect service delivery but also compromise the efficiency of leaders.
Isaiah Tumwesigye, the Kasese Municipality town clerk says that they expect revenues to increase in the next financial year as the government eases the lockdown on some of the businesses.
Hundreds of properties were destroyed when major rivers including Lhubiriha, Mubuku, Nyamwamba, Thako and Namugasani burst their banks in May last year following heavy rains. More than nine lives were lost.
