Kasese LCV Chairperson urges IDPs at camp to return home

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Flood-displaced residents in Kasese District have been urged to return home.  They have been asked to vacate the temporary camp at Kasangalii SDA Primary School due to declining support.

More than 50 households in Bwesumbu sub county were displaced in May this year following heavy rains that buttered Bwesumbu Sub County.

Most of the effected families pitched camp at Kasangali SDA primary School. Others temporarily sought refuge at Nyakanengo primary school and Kasangali health center II.

Kasese district authorities are now saying that the residents should consider reuniting with their relatives, emphasizing that the current living conditions in the camp are unbearable.

Eliphazi Muhindi, the LCV chairperson, says there is declining support from both the government and other development partners and its only wise that the affected move to stay with relatives while those whose land is still existing they move in to start a new life.

He adds that they are engaging government to ensure that those whose lands were completely covered are found a safer place to stay.

Joy Kabugho, the  deputy head teacher at Kasangali SDA says the presence of IDP’s is disrupting the learning process as the IDP keep hosting visitor’s seeking to assess the conditions or offer some relief.

But Reuben Watsurawa, the local council II chairperson for Kasangali parish wants the district to extend some basic relief to the IDP’s who can find relatives to stay with. He says most families are currently struggling to have food and other basic items.
