The new blocks constructed by japan embassy

Katakwi, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Embassy of Japan in Uganda has commissioned two newly constructed and furnished classroom blocks at Oriou Primary School in Katakwi District.

The 300 Million Shillings under the Assistance for grassroots Human Security Project grant covered two classroom blocks, 10 stance latrine and furniture for the classrooms.

James Peter Okoel, the headteacher of Oriau Primary School says that the lack of classrooms was hindering teaching.   He says that many classrooms were dilapidated, too small and on the verge of collapse.

The Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, Fukuzawa Hidemoto, explained that they had to intervene and ensure that a more enabling learning environment is created for the pupils and the teachers. He added that the grant is to boost the efforts of countries like Uganda to realize economic growth and achieve sustainable development goals.

Hidemoto also asked members of the school management committee, parents, pupils and teachers to make proper use of the new facilities and guard them jealously from wrong elements who may want to vandalize them.

Several schools in Katakwi district under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme in Ntoroko district is in a dilapidated state, which has forced teachers to abandon their work.

Structures like classrooms are dilapidated, while some schools have inadequate latrines which are shared by teachers and pupils. In some of the schools, the classrooms don’t have windows and there is an acute shortage of furniture.
