Kawempe Muslim Secondary School has been closed after suffering the second fire incident in a period of one week.
According to some sources at the school all students except those in candidate classes have been asked to go home temporarily as investigations into the cause of the fire are carried out.
Last Sunday, on the eve of the Uganda Certificate of Education examinations, fire gutted one of the girl’s dormitories shortly after the strike when the aggrieved students said they were fed up of the poorly cooked meals.
The authorities have not made any statement about the fire which is said to have started as students reported for evening lessons at around 7:00pm, Thursday.
The School had earlier suspended 300 Senior 5 and 6 students for one week for inciting a strike over what the students termed “poor diet and sanitation”.
Police managed to put out the fire and no casualties have been reported.
A number of parents who insisted on taking their children back home with them were prohibited from accessing the school premises.
Scores of boys were beaten and about 30 girls sustained injuries when Police fired tear gas into their dormitories. The injured students were later admitted at Kyadondo Medical Centre
The school is one of the academic giants in the country.
