Coach Abdallah Mubiru: KCCA FC yet to reach its peak performance

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | KCCA FC Head Coach, Abdallah Mubiru, is hesitant to suggest that the club has returned to its peak performance, despite securing consecutive victories against SC Villa, UPDF, and URA FC.
On Tuesday KCCA defeated URA 3-2 at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo. KCCA FC came twice from behind in the five-goal thriller. The result extended their winning streak to four games, including wins over Bright Stars, SC Villa, and UPDF. For Mubiru, this marked his fifth win in the seven Premier League games he has managed.

Mubiru, a holder of a CAF A license, assumed his role in November, succeeding Portuguese coach Sergio Daniel Traguil, who was dismissed in October due to poor results. KCCA FC had endured a dismal start, failing to secure a single victory in the Uganda Premier League, suffering defeats to BUL FC, Maroons FC, Express FC, and Kitara FC.

Since Mubiru’s arrival, KCCA FC which last won a league in 2019 has since rejuvenated and picked at least 15 points out of the possible 21, a development that has led to speculations that the club might be returning to the good old days.

But, Mubiru refrained from direct comparisons, emphasizing that he is merely building the foundation he inherited adding that they are only supposed to keep on working hard and see that they keep the flow of the results.

Norman Namanya opened the scoring for URA FC just three minutes into the game. However, left-back Herbert Achai swiftly equalized for KCCA FC with a header from a corner that URA failed to defend.

Moments later, Vianney Ssekajugo restored URA FC’s lead by slotting into an open net from James Begisa’s delivery. However, Ssekajugo unintentionally headed an own goal from Etienne Katenga’s cross, leveling the score before Muhammad Shaban deftly outmaneuvered URA goalkeeper Rogers Omeddwa to complete KCCA’s remarkable comeback.

URA FC Head Coach David Obua, whose team suffered a fourth defeat of the season said that his team played well but conceded that they became emotional when they conceded an own goal, dramatically altering the outcome of the match.
