Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA has extended its operation to evict street vendors to Kawempe division.
Hundreds of street vendors operating in areas of Bwaise, Kawempe stage, Kalerwe, Kyebando, and Mpererwe have been evicted off the streets by KCCA enforcement officers with the help of the police and the army.
Boda boda cyclists who have been operating along the roads in Kawempe division have also been evicted.
Anthony Opio, a boda boda rider in Bwaise says that they paid more than 400,000 shillings to obtain the boda-boda stages, but he is surprised that they have been evicted from the stage.
Muhammed Kakooza from Kawempe said that KCCA should have given them ample time to relocate their businesses before the eviction.
Ronald Kakanga, a vendor in Bwaise protested the eviction saying that street vending is his only source of income.
Henry Bukenya, the KCCA manager of commercial services said that the vendors were littering the streets with garbage, which is a burden to the authority.
“These vendors have specific markets where they have stalls but they want to operate on streets to get more customers, and some of them have relocated to the markets already”.
Bukenya also said that the taxi and boda boda stages that were evicted were illegal and they were not paying any money to KCCA as the operators allege.
According to Bukenya, the operation will soon be carried out in other divisions. He advised vendors in other divisions to occupy the respective markets in the divisions.
Bukenya also said that traders who own shops are not supposed to display their merchandise outside. He cited traders who sell mattresses and clothes.
