KCCA, WFP launch study to fight urban malnutrition

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kampala Capital City Authority-KCCA and the World Food Program have launched a program aimed at fighting malnutrition and food insecurity in Kampala.

The program that was launched on Thursday at the City Hall in Kampala will start with a survey around the suburbs of Kampala targeting 1,000 households in the areas of Kamwokya, Kisenyi and Bwaise. The study will be carried out by Makerere University School of Public Health.

Jennifer Musisi Semakula, Executive director KCCA says the survey will help guide the authorities on how best to help the people of Kampala fight food insecurity and malnutrition.

Data from the 2016 Demographic and Health Survey shows that there is an increase in number of children under five who are either malnourished or stunted in Kampala. It shows an increase from 13.5 percent in 2011 to 18 percent in 2016.

El Khidir Daloum, Country Director WFP says that achieving zero hunger in Uganda is only possible if malnutrition in Kampala is curbed.

The KCCA spokesperson, Peter Kauju says that the cost of the project will be generated following the completion of the study.

“Right now we are starting with a feasibility study around Kampala. Once the study is complete, we shall know what the situation looks like and hence know how much is needed for the project.” Kauju said.
