Kibet, Annet Chelangat triumph at Eastern cross country championships

Kapchorwa, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Ugandan  Long-distance runner Daniel Kibet on Saturday won the Regional cross country championships at Tuban playgrounds in Kapchorwa Municipality.

The Prisons athletics club athlete, comfortably protected the 10 kilometer race success in 30 minutes 53 seconds. He was followed by Alex Kiplangat of Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) in 31 minutes 64 seconds while Leonard Chemonges of Uganda Wild Life Authority (UWA) came third in 31 minutes 22 seconds respectively.

Kibet said that the win is a prospect mission of 2024 of his career in qualifying at the National cross country championships set for February 10th in Tororo, which will eventually earn him a ticket to represent Uganda in the world cross country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.

“Transitioning from junior category, I look forward to be part of team Uganda in the senior class, and this performance has given me confidence”. said Kibet.

Meanwhile, Annet Chemengich Chelangat of Uganda Wildlife Authority, won the senior women’s category after crossing the finishing line at 36 minutes, 11 to defeat Rebecca Cherop of UPDF who crossed the finishing line at 36 minutes 36 seconds and Vanis Chemutai who came third in 38 minutes and 15 minutes.

Chelangat, said that, with the trend of demand for Ugandan Female Athletes to represent internationally, it is an opportunity for her in her career.

“No need to wait when such opportunity is available, as I also look forward for better performance at the National cross country championships,” Chelangat said.

Benjamin Njia, the Vice President technical of Uganda Athletics Federation says, the event gives opportunity to mushrooming athletes to show case their potential in the sport, which the UAF has positively embraced. He also noted that in the past five years, the federation has witnessed talent identification through regional athletics events.

The national cross country championships will be used to select the final National team that will represent Uganda at the World cross country championships in Belgrade, Serbia on March 30th 2024.
