KITEEZI TRAGEDY: 120 taking temporary shelter, death toll rises to 30

KAMPALA, UGANDA | THE INDEPENDENT | An investigation by the Uganda Police Force, KCCA, and the Office of the Prime Minister has says that thirty-three households were affected by the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill.

According to the findings, only 120 people were registered in the temporary shelter at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School playground as victims.  The findings also indicated that only 33 homes were buried under the garbage on Saturday.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, said the team also suspects that 39 died following the accident.

“These thirty-nine are the people who were registered as missing by this committee. This includes 35 who are community members and well-known residents and then four are garbage collectors who were found sorting the garbage by the time of the incident,” revealed Onyango.

Meanwhile, six bodies were retrieved by Wednesday, bringing the total number of retrieved bodies to 30 on day 5 of the rescue operation at Kiteezi.

Among the retrieved on Wednesday are Hairati Natumanya 20 years, Ronald Lwere,  Moses Owori 03 years, Richard Okello Richard 31 years, Jane Alowo 33 years, and Jane Achengi 06 years.
