KITEEZI TRAGEDY: Survivor returns to Kasese with call on parents to prioritize education

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu-OBR cultural institution in Kasese is asking parents to prioritize education of their children. The call came after the institution received 16-year- old Gilbert Mumbere, who survived the Kitezi landfill collapse in Wakiso district last week.

Mumbere had gone to serve as a house helper in one of the homes that was brought down by the landfill  killing the occupants. He had been sent out to buy sugar before the incident happened.

Following news, the kingdom minister of Gender, Rehabilitation and Disabilities Affairs, Best Juliet Kaboke said she was directed by the OBR cultural leader Charles Wesley Mumbere to ensure that Mumbere is returned to Kasese. Bakoko said there was a meeting between the office of the prime minister and security team in Kitezi and they jointly agreed that the victim be handed over to the cultural institution.

She told URN on Sunday that her office is giving Mumbere psychosocial support, trace his family is reported to be in Maliba Town Council adding that the King was committed to contribute to his education. Mumbere dropped out at primary four before he started seeking odd jobs.

Bakoko however wants parents to perform their duties of providing and nurturing their children arguing that their many young  people in urban places around the country doing odd jobs as a result of  being neglected by their parents.

She added that the cultural institution has a number of bursaries meant for the less privileged families.

Godfrey Kanyonyi, the minister of information, mobilisation and Kingdom Spokesperson applauded the media that through news brought Mumbere to the attention the King.

He also called upon well-wishers to support the Kingdom in its cause to support the learning of Mumbere and reuniting him with his family.

Mumbere was willing to return to school if given chance.

More that 30 people have been confirmed dead after the landfill disaster.
