Kwania district leaders push for upgrade of health center IV

Kwania, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kwania district leaders have asked the Parliamentary Health Committee to push for the upgrade of Aduku health center IV.

Aduku health center IV is facing challenges of insufficient medical equipment, inadequate infrastructures as well as the absence of an ambulance which has affected efficient service delivery in the district.

Addressing the Parliamentary Health Committee during a visit to the facility on Tuesday, Geoffrey Alex Ogwal, the Kwania LCV chairperson told the committee that the facility which serves more than 26,000 people also lacks key medical equipment like an x-ray and ultrasound machines, dilapidated structures, hence affecting service delivery.

Dr Moses Ebong, the Kwania District Health Officer noted that male, female and children are sharing the same ward. He added that the overwhelming number of patients seeking services at the health facility has left a big service gap to the communities. Ebong asked the committee to consider pushing for an ambulance and the construction of a modern ward and a theatre.

Albina Awor, the Chief Administrative Officer of Kwania says that requests to upgrade the health centre have been futile. She says that once upgraded, the facility will not only facilitate staff motivation but also bridge the health service delivery gap.

The deputy chairperson of the Parliamentary Health Committee and Ntwetwe County Member of Parliament Joel Ssebikaali acknowledged the need to elevate the health facility. He pledged to follow up the matter with the government.

Aduku health center IV located in Ikwera ward, Aduku town council has four doctors, a specialist, five midwives and 52 nurses. It is the only health centre IV in the district. On average, the health center receives 900 patients and carries out more than 100 deliveries a month.
