Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The President of the National Unity Platform Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has appealed to members of his party, who were elected at different local government levels to stop fighting for leadership positions.
Speaking to a delegation of local government leaders from Wakiso district today at his home in Magere, Kyagulanyi said it bothers him to hear stories of how councillors at different local governments such as Kampala, Wakiso, Masaka, and Mukono, among others are fighting for speakership positions.
He said that this portrays them as self-seekers who are not interested in serving Ugandans. Kyagulanyi said the major focus for any person elected on the NUP ticket is to see that the party reclaims what he calls their victory which was stolen from them by President Yoweri Museveni.
Kyagulanyi maintains that his party defeated President Yoweri Museveni in the January 14 presidential election with 54 percent. However, according to official results from the Electoral Commission, Museveni defeated Kyagulanyi and nine other candidates with 58 percent of the valid votes and is expected to be sworn in for the 6th term as president on May 12.
Kyagulanyi used today’s address to reassure his supporters that Museveni’s swearing-in is just a temporary setback in their plan to take over the leadership of the country.
Mathias Mpuuga, the Deputy President of the National Unity Platform in charge of Buganda called upon leaders elected on the party card to respect protocol and allow the leadership to choose those who will lead them. Mpuuga, like Kyagulanyi, said fighting for positions portrays such leaders as greedy and insensitive to the needs of Ugandans.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Nansana municipality, Regina Bakitte implored all NUP leaders to steer clear of corruption. She said in her current term as mayor, most of the councillors were implicated in corruption scandals and all but two lost their reelection bids.
