KYAGULANYI INJURY: Police blame NUP supporters

Kyagulanyi being carried to the hospital

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Uganda Police Force-UPF is accusing the supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) of instigating chaos in Bulindo-Kira, which resulted in the injury of their party leader, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu. According to the police, the situation escalated when Kyagulanyi’s team began throwing stones at officers conducting traffic duties.

The police maintain that Kyagulanyi’s injuries may have been caused by him “stumbling and falling” during the altercation. Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke explains that three police personnel were injured and three vehicles damaged during the chaotic scenes, allegedly instigated by the NUP procession on Tuesday evening.

Rusoke says that only a thorough investigation, including a medical report, will reveal the true cause of Kyagulanyi’s injuries—whether from a bullet, a tear gas canister, or other means. “Investigations are currently underway,” he told journalists this morning.

However, in a statement, the National Unity Platform (NUP) Spokesperson, Joel Ssenyonyi, the party rubbished the police’s claims, insisting that their supporters were moving peacefully before being intercepted by police officers.

“They are saying that he stumbled and fell as he entered his car, and that’s how he got injured according to them. How ridiculous! Yet it was them who started shooting bullets and tear gas at unarmed civilians,” Ssenyonyi said.

Ssenyonyi further stated that Kyagulanyi would undergo surgery to remove fragments of a tear gas canister from his leg. “The X-ray report shows there are some fragments from the tear gas canister embedded in his leg, and surgery will be conducted to remove them,” Ssenyonyi added.

He concluded by condemning the police’s actions, stating, “This brutality is not only despicable, but it speaks volumes about a decades-old regime whose only language is violence towards peaceful citizens. This chaos will end, and Ugandans will attain their freedom!”
