Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Unvaccinated students at Kyambogo University have been allowed to access the campus and attend lectures.

On Monday, institutions opened their gates to students after months of closure following the outbreak of Covid-19, but several students were turned away due to lack of Covid-19 vaccination cards.

At Kyambogo University, students and staff arrived at the different gates of the institution only to be told that only those with university identification cards and Covid-19 vaccination cards will access the university premises.

On Tuesday, the unvaccinated students were able to access the university through the Eastern and Western gates, but with strict observance of the Covid-19 standard operating procedures.

At the main gate though, students were only required to present university identification cards or admission letters for those in the first year.

On Monday, Professor Eli Katunguka, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the university had not issued any guidelines restricting non-vaccinated students from accessing campus.

Varina Namara, a First-Year student pursuing Bachelors of Education with Arts explained that unlike yesterday when she was turned away, there were no disruptions today.

Gilbert Wanume, a student in his first year pursuing a bachelor in business administration noted that learning from yesterday’s experience made it easier for him today since he ensured to move along with his student identification card.

Another student Vivian Namulumba pursuing a bachelor of accounting in finance explained that she did not have to go through trouble accessing the university premises.

Following the u-turn by the university, there was a big number of students who turned up for lecturers on Tuesday. Several students were also seen at the university medical centre queuing up to get vaccinated.
