Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Following the continuous rains currently pounding the Bugisu region, a fresh landslide has hit five sub-counties in Bududa District.
According to Militon Kamoti, the Bududa District LCV chairperson, the landslide occurred last night and affected sub-counties such as Bufuma, Nametsi, Bumayoka, Lutsekhe, and Bundesi.
He stated that six homes have been buried, along with crops like maize, bananas, and coffee, but no lives have been lost.
Kamoti also mentioned that a big rock from the national park has blocked the major Nametsi-Mabono road, which connects people from the affected five sub-counties to Bufuma Health Center III.
He added, “Currently, people are not accessing health services since the road has been blocked, and the rains are still ongoing.”
Patrick Nabutanyo, the acting Bududa district communication officer, stated that they have compiled a report and sent it to the Ministry of Disaster. He urged people living in disaster-risk areas to move to nearby churches and schools, as rains are still high in Bududa now.
Recently, the Government of Uganda compensated each home with 16 million shillings to assist people living in disaster-risk areas and relocated them to Bulambuli at the Bunambutye resettlement area, but some decided to go back.
