Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Kawempe North MP Latif Sebaggala has suspended his mayoral bid days after he was endorsed by the National Unity Platform for the race. He said that the decision was based on the need for a stronger opposition as the country heads for the 2021 general elections.

Sebaggala held a press conference this afternoon at his home in Kawempe and declared that he was pulling out of the race to reduce on the congestion of opposition candidates which gives NRM an upper hand in the race.

So far, the opposition candidates who have announced their interest in the seat include, the incumbent Erias Lukwago, Joseph Mayanja also known as Jose Chameleone and the current Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Sempala. Earlier on, former Kampala mayor Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala had also indicated that he intended to contest for the same seat.
