Leaflets dropped threatening lives cause panic in Rukungiri

Rukungiri, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Panic and tension has continued to mount among the residents of Buyanja sub county in Rukungiri district after unknown thugs dropped leaflets threatening to kill people within the area.

The threatening leaflets have been found in Kisharara cell, Rubanga parish, Buyanja sub county in Rukungiri district written in Luganda language with messages threatening residents that they should prepare for their time is coming.

According to Agaba Emmy Rubondo, the Buyanja sub county chairperson, the assailants warned that they would start their attacks on 3rd October 2021.

“The leaflets which carried messages in Luganda, were first seen by juveniles who took them to their guardian,” Rubondo said.

The message on the leaflets also rallies residents to always go home earlier so that the assailants can find them in their homes.

They also promised to chop off heads of unnamed village chairpersons in Buyanja as well as other people in Buyanja and Kebisoni sub counties.

Edwin Atukunda, the Rukungiri district acting police commander confirmed to our reporter that it true the leaflets were dropped and found in Buyanja sub county, Rukungiri district.

Atukunda noted that as police, they are doing all they can to contain the situation. He therefore asked the residents to stay calm and leave the police to work on the matter.

“I am appealing to the public to stay calm, be very careful and to report any person they suspect to be a wrong doer,”  Atukunda said.

Stephen Bewayo Nsubuga, the Rukungiri District Resident Commissioner confided to this reporter that his office has already got a report of the matter, adding that security teams are already assessing the situation.

“My office is aware and well informed about this situation, and as security, we have already deployed investigative officers to assess the situation on the ground” Bewayo said.

Bewayo who heads the district security noted that this should be a wake up reminder to all the residents to work hand in hand in fighting this criminality.

The RDC who also confirmed that the assailants in previous leaflets said they want 10 heads from the district, as threats of murders that started from Masaka spread, asking  the residents to observe vigilance and report any suspicious elements within their areas so that this threat can be easily dealt with.

A week ago, the suspected attackers indicated that they were done with the Greater Masaka region and were now planning to strike Bushenyi, Mitooma, Rukungiri, and Mbarara, according to letters they dropped in Bushenyi district.
