Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Mbarara has charged Atwongyirwe Doreen, a lecturer at Bishop Stuart University, with causing grievous harm to her maid.
Atwongyirwe, a resident of Katete Central Cell, was charged under section 199(a) of the Penal Code Act and remanded to the Mbarara Government Main Prison.
Atwogyirwe appeared before Bagala Esther on Thursday afternoon.
According to the charge sheet before Court, on the 25th of September 2024, Atwongyirwe, while in Katete Central Cell, poured hot water on her maid, Kansiime Anita, causing grievous harm to her body with the intent to cause bodily harm.
Kansiime, on her sickbed at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, told our reporter that Atwogyirwe found her bathing her children late in the evening and asked her why she had delayed washing the children.
She said Atwogyirwe grabbed a jug containing hot water meant to wash the second baby and poured it on her.
Bagala did not allow Atwongyirwe to enter a plea, stating that her court lacked jurisdiction to hear such cases, and remanded her until 15th October.
Muganga Steven, a human rights activist, stated that it was shameful for a university lecturer to commit a crime and attempt to obstruct justice.

I thought this evil woman would be charged with a more serious charge like attempted murder. Charging her with “causing grievious bodily harm” is like charging her with having slapped Anita and that won’t attract a more severe custodial sentence.
