Lightning strikes four dead in Mayuge

Mayuge, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Four people from the same family have been struck dead by lightning in Mayuge district.

The dead who are residents of Sagit Island in Jaguzi sub-county have been identified as Patrick Wambi aged 35, his wife Brenda Nantanda aged 28, their two children Emmanuel Wamuno aged four years and a two year old Benjamin Masaba.

Musasizi Rakib, a resident of Sagit Island says that the victims were burnt beyond recognition inside their grass thatched house

“Wambi and all the members of his entire household were completely burnt, but we alerted police personnel attached to the Marine unit who ferried their remains to the health facility,” he says.

The Busoga East police spokesperson James Mubi confirms the incident adding that, four other grass-thatched houses across the island were completely torched by the lightning flames, however, no causalities were registered.

Mubi adds that the police Marine unit and Mayuge district officials zoned the lightning risk areas along the island and sensitized the population and predicted the various health risks which might result from their continued presence in such areas, however, several residents are yet to vacate the red zones.
