Lightning strikes two dead, injures four in Kanungu

Kanungu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Two people have been confirmed dead and four others injured after being struck by lightning in Kinaba sub-county, Kanungu district.

The incident occurred at around 2:00pm in Muksyokwe village, Kyamukende parish. Those who died on spot are Edidiya Turyatemba, 42, and Diana Kajowa, 31, all residents of Mukasyokwe village.

The injured are Frola Nyinakiiza, 40, and her children Susan Ayebazibwe,16, Friday Akandwanaho, 5, and Blessing Kirungi.

Tom Mushabe, an area resident told our reporter that the incident occurred when both the deceased and injured were in Turyayebwa’s garden digging.

Mushabe says that the incident occurred during the heavy downpour. Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for Kigezi region says that all the injured victims are family members of Turyayebwa while Kajowa had gone to work as a casual laborer.

Maate says that the injured have been rushed to the nearby health facilities for treatment while efforts to remove the bodies of the deceased are underway.

This is not the first time lightning striking people in Kanungu district. On April 20th, 2018, Aggrey Ainembabazi, a resident of Kinyisa cell in Retendere parish, Kayonza sub county and a pupil at Nyakeina Parents Primary School in Kayonza sub county was struck to death and seven others hospitalized.

Earlier on April 3, 2018, lightning struck a woman and her daughter in Bujengwe village, Karangara parish in Kayonza sub county.
