Lira, Kampala | THE INDEPENDENT | Lango is mourning the passing of Alex Oryang Chono, a lecturer at Lira University. Oryang Chono, a lecturer in the Department of Public Administration and Management, passed away on Tuesday evening, according to the senior university communications officer, Patrick Opio.
He explained that the deceased collapsed and passed away shortly after leaving Lira Main Market where he had gone to purchase food.
Yine Felix Ambrosis, the former Speaker of Apac District Local Government, expressed shock at Chono’s passing. He described the deceased as an academic, sociable, approachable, and down-to-earth individual.
Christ Ongom, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Regional Vice Chairperson overseeing Lango, referred to the late Oryang Chono as an ideologue, mentor, and key ideological facilitator for UPC in Lango. His passing represents not just a significant loss to the people of Lango but also a setback for the UPC fraternity in the region.
Chono was an active member of UPC. He previously served as the Chegere Sub County Male councilor in the Apac District Local Government from 2011 to 2016. During this time, he chaired the Finance, Planning, and Administration Committee.
A vibrant and courageous politician, Chono later contested for the Apac District LCV Chairperson seat but lost to his ally Bob Okae in the UPC’s primaries. Subsequently, he retired from active politics and transitioned into the teaching profession.
