Gdynia, Poland | THE INDEPENDENT | Joshua Cheptegei aims to crown a dream year that has seen him break three world records, with another fine performance at the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships Gdynia 2020 today.
Cheptegei will lead Uganda’s team in the 21.1km distance, as they seek their first individual medal in the competition. Uganda last participated at the 2018 World Half Marathon in Valencia, Spain with the men’s team finishing 5th and women 16th overall.
Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo Moses Kibet, Stephen Kissa and Abel Chebet will form the men’s team, while the women’s team shall comprise of Juliet Chekwel, Doreen Chemutai, Doreen Chesang, Rachael Zena Chebet.
“I feel good, I feel recovered and ready for the race,” he said. “It’s going to be a fantastic event,” Chepetegei said before the race.
“It’s been my dream to make a debut at the half marathon,” he said. “This title will be something very special for me. A debut and a win? That would be amazing.”
Cheptegei has experience on the roads, as he also holds the world best for 15km. He will be accompanied in this new half-marathon challenge by Kiplimo, another emerging off-track star.
Kiplimo,19, came second to Cheptegei,24 at the world cross country championships last year.
