Portugal stun France 1-0 in Euro 2016 final

Paris, France | AFP |

Portugal won their first European Championship title on Sunday after a low drive from striker Eder in extra-time gave them a 1-0 victory over France despite the absence of injured superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Eder’s goal came after Andre-Pierre Gignac almost gave France victory in added time at the end of 90 minutes when he hit the post with a scuffed shot.

Portugal 0 France 0 at half-time of Euro 2016 finals

Host nation France and Portugal were goalless at half-time of the Euro 2016 final on Sunday after Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off injured in tears just 25 minutes into the match.

The Real Madrid forward had attempted to play on with a heavily bandaged knee after hurting his left knee in a heavy challenge from France’s Dimitri Payet.

But after one acceleration midway through the first half Ronaldo signalled to the bench that he could not carry on and could not hide his despair as he was replaced by Ricardo Quaresma.

Even before Ronaldo departed, France had the majority of possession and almost took the lead with a header from Antoine Griezmann that Rui Patricio brilliantly pushed away.

Moussa Sissoko blasted over the crossbar in France’s other main chance of the half.
