Lima, Peru | THE INDEPENDENT & IAAF |  Loice Chekwemoi came second as Uganda grabbed a third medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships Lima 24 on Thursday.
The 17-year-old African champion becomes only the seventh girl to bring home glory from the World juniors after Peruth Chemutai, Dorcas Inzikuru, Prisca Chesang, Winnie Jemutai, Annet Negesa and Charity Cherop.
In a race dominated by pre-race favourite Sembo Almayew, Ugandan teenager Chekwemoi kept close to the winner to break the Ethiopia-Kenya dorminance of the race
Almayew become the first ever Ethiopian world U20 women’s steeplechase champion after surging clear of her chief rival Chekwemoi of Uganda on the penultimate lap and coming home in 9:12.71. Adding a gold to her silver in this event from two years ago, she also took 0.07 off the championship record set by Celliphine Chespol in 2018. Chekwemoi clocked 9:18.84 in second with Kenya’s Diana Chepkemoi taking bronze in 9:29.84.
Chekwemoi’s silver puts Uganda in 15th position on the medal table with three medals. Uganda won two bronze on the opening day of the championships on Tuesday, when the 5000m pair of Keneth Kiprop and Charity Cherop both secured bronze medals.
The pace of the 3,000m Thursday was too high for the Ugandan teenagers Herbet Kibet and Titus Musau, and they finished 5th and 12th. There was an upset in the men’s 3000m as Norway’s Andreas Fjeld Halvorsen kicked to victory in 8:20.56, coming home ahead of Kenya’s Denis Kipkoech (8:20.79) and Britain’s Edward Bird (8:21.00).
Earlier, Bentalin Yeko and Keziah Chebet advanced to the 3000m final due later tonight, before Uganda’s last competitor Hosea Chemutai races for gold in the 3,000m steeplechase tomorrow.
Lima is hosting the World Athletics U20 Championships for the first time, bringing together more than 1,700 athletes and 130 teams,
