The Kampala City Mayor Erias Lukwago has this morning been voted out of office.
In a special council meeting that was hurriedly held at City Hall on Monday morning chaired by Frank Tumwebaze the minister of the Presidency and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), 29 councillors voted against Lukwago and only three were in favour of retaining him as mayor.
Lukwago’s legal team had earlier secured a court injunction halting the proceedings at City Hall, which was delivered to the minister at the start of the proceedings but that was not enough to stop the councilors from voting him out of office.
Scuffles ensued outside the City Hall main gate where both uniformed and plain clothed police had been heavily deployed as Members of Parliament including John Lukyamuzi and Lawyers in favour of Lukwago tried to force their way in to the City Hall premises to halt the proceedings.
Traders in Kiseka market rioted in protest to the news of Lukwago’s impeachment but were quickly dispersed by police and all shops in the area closed for business.
