Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Caretaker Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Luwero, the Rt. Rev. James William Ssebaggala strongly condemned same-sex relationships during his sermon at the Christmas Service at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Luwero Town Council. Ssebaggala, a retired Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Mukono, urged the faithful to pray for an end to the promotion of same-sex relationships.
Expressing concern, Bishop Ssebaggala highlighted the contradiction wherein those advocating same-sex relationships are also interested in adopting children. He argued that it’s contradictory for individuals aware that same-sex couples cannot naturally conceive children to pursue such relationships while seeking to adopt.
The Bishop emphasized the belief that God ordained marriage between a man and a woman to procreate and populate the Earth, deeming the promotion of same-sex relationships as ungodly. He commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa and others for their steadfast stance against homosexuality.
In response to President Museveni’s assent to the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda (CoU), expressed the Church’s support for the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023.
“The Church of Uganda welcomes the diligent work of Parliament and His Excellency, the President, in crafting the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023,” it read in part. The Church of Uganda had previously severed ties with the Church of England following the latter’s decision to allow blessings for same-sex unions.
Additionally, Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luwero, criticized individuals exhibiting selfish behavior by seizing land. During his Christmas homily at Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace Kasana Cathedral, Bishop Mukasa lamented the trend of powerful figures displacing peasants from land for their gains.
He questioned the morality of those seeking to buy extensive land areas or possess entire villages, highlighting the displacement of others in the process. Bishop Mukasa invoked the teachings of Jesus Christ, emphasizing kindness and consideration towards others.
He also condemned the issuance of multiple land titles for the same piece of land, denouncing this form of injustice. Both bishops delivered their messages during Christmas services, urging for moral rectitude and justice in societal behaviors.
