Luwero, North Ankole diocese get new bishops

Luwero, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The House of Bishops has elected Bishops for North Ankole and Luwero Dioceses .

The House of Bishops sitting at Lweza Training and Conference Center on Wednesday evening elected Rev. Canon Alfred Muhoozi as the third Bishop of North Ankole Diocese, and Rev. Canon Wilson Kisekka as the Fourth Bishop of Luwero Diocese replacing retired Bishop Eridard Nsubuga Kironde.

According to the statement released by Rev.Canon William Ongeng, the Provincial secretary of the Church of Uganda, Rev. Canon Muhoozi will be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop on May 26th, 2024 at Emmanuel Cathedral, Rushere.

Rev. Canon Muhoozi, aged 51 years is currently the Archdeacon of Kinoni Archdeaconry in North Ankole Diocese and married to Molly Muhoozi. He has four children and two grandchildren.

The statement further indicates that Rev. Canon Wilson Kisekka will be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop of Luwero Diocese on March 24th, 2024 at St. Mark Cathedral, a week after the tenure of caretaker Bishop James William Ssebaggala expires on March 18th this year.

Kisekka aged 53 years is currently archdeacon of Ndeeba Archdeaconry in Mukono Diocese and married to Racheal Milly Nakayenga.

Bishop Elect Kisekka faces uphill task of reconciling Christians who are still protesting against the decision to nullify their preferred native Bishop elect Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula.

The House of Bishops sitting at Kabalega Resort Hotel in Hoima on June 28th, 2023 nullified the elections of Rev. Canon Godfrey Kasana Ssemakula as Fourth Bishop of Luwero Diocese after getting credible information the Bishop-elect’s integrity was misrepresented during the nomination and election process, which invalidated the election.

Four Christians who include John Ssendowooza, Moses Bemba, Christopher Ssajjabi Katende and Moses Kakembo have since dragged 37 Anglican Bishops of constitute of the House of Bishops to Luwero High Court challenging their decision to nullify the election of Kasana. Court issued summons to the Bishops but the case is yet to be heard.

But earlier on October 25th, 2023, the Principal Judge Flavian Zeija dismissed another case challenging the nullification of Kasana on grounds that the petitioners brought the case against the wrong party and that the court wasn’t competent enough to handle spiritual matters.

Zeija added that the Anglican Church has canon laws and provides how the Bishop is appointed and how disputes relating to the elections are resolved.
