Tanzania’s President John Pombe Magufuli has arrived, one of 17 heads of state expected for Thursday’s inauguration of President Yoweri Museveni.
It is Magufuli’s first visit to Uganda since his election as president last year.
This is the 5th presidential inauguration after elections, since the NRM came into power in 1986. The first election was held in 1996, followed by 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016.
Government has invited 17 Heads of States from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Lesotho, South Sudan, Tanzania, Mali, Chad, Togo, Swaziland, China Nigeria, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea and the Russian Federation. Besides some countries will send representatives from East African Community, Japan, Germany, India and Rwanda.
Museveni won the elections in February by 60.62%, edging Dr Kizza Besigye who came second with 35.61%. Besigye challenged the election in court, but the Supreme Court ruled last month Museveni was validly elected.
