Second Lieutenant
Second Lieutenant is the most junior grade of commissioned officer. This is the first rank given to graduates of cadet courses. The officer has one black star on the shoulder.
Lieutenant
The insignia is two black stars on the shoulder. The officer commands a platoon composed of 14-60 soldiers and is always deputised by a Non Commissioned Officer. The platoon is composed of two to four squads.
Captain
The officer has three black stars on the shoulder. This officer commands three to five platoons.
Major
From Major to General, these are categorised as senior officers. Their insignias are red. This rank has a Court of Arms on the shoulder. A Major deputises a Lieutenant Colonel as a battalion commander.
Lieutenant Colonel
The rank has a Court Of Arms insignia and one star as a pip. This officer commands a battalion 700 to 1,000 soldiers. A Major is the second in command of a battalion. From this rank and below, these are regimental officers because they are supposed to be on the battlefield. One must have attended a Senior and Command Staff College Course.
Colonel
The pip of a colonel has two stars, a Court Of Arms insignia and gadgets (red collars). It’s at this rank that the officer wears red collars.
Brigadier
The officer has three stars and a Court Of Arms insignia. This rank commands a battalion of 3,000 to 5,000 soldiers. A brigade has two to five battalions.
Major General
A Major General is supposed to command a division with three brigades. The insignia changes to Court Of Arms and crossed swords. The red collars have golden linings.
Lieutenant General
This is the second highest rank in the UPDF. The officer has a Court of Arms insignia, crossed swords and one star. The officer commands services like land forces, the air force or artillery.
Thank you for the story. However,am wondering how you keep asserting that Muhoozi skipped the rank of Col.yet in the photo on the top of this story he is clearly hanging the pips of a Col.on his chest. How do you explain that contradiction?
Thank You.
hahahha promoting someone who has not fought wars is like making a nursery goer as a graduate without taking tests and exams ,so the man has not shot or killed someone like those people who are killing ALSABAB IN SOMALIA ,and yet some still remain as sergents for 20 yrs and yet someone in kla is promoted evry morning what a hell in uganda, injustices, corruption, nepotism, tribalism, impunity, are taking place in the country, most nrm mps have no papers ,the police have become criminals, hhahahhaha what a stupid uganda,i hate this country.
