Kampala, Uganda | LOUIS JADWONG | Uganda had better not be a one-batsman team if they are to keep any hopes of glory in the ongoing World Cricket League Division 3 tournament in Oman.
Arnold Otwani has brought in nearly half of Uganda’s 365 runs as an opener, hitting 88 in game one and 52 in the next for a total 140. After the two opening games, the fear is that batting is yet again Uganda’s Achilles heel.
As the USA showed three days ago, Uganda will need more than one batsman to show up if they are to rescue the tournament whose top two teams will be promoted to the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament.
Uganda’ Cricket Cranes had started the tournament on a bright note last Friday, beating lower ranked Denmark before falling against the USA.
Up next is a tricky tie against neigbours Kenya, who are in free fall in the world rankings. Kenya, the only ICC Associate member to appear in five successive editions of ICC World Cup – 1996 to 2011 – but have since been demoted to division 2 and now division 3.
Uganda and Kenya now play as equals for the first time in the history of the Division 3 tournament. Whoever loses will ‘pack his bags’.
The Kenyans have looked miserable in Oman so far, and have suffered heavy defeats in their two opening matches. They are basically there for the taking.

Breaking news: Uganda’s Irfan Afridi has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect. He’s been dropped from the Uganda XI as well vs Kenya as one of three changes in their lineup today.

Uganda will go into the game minus key bowler Irfan Afridi, who has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect.
In a statement, ICC said, “Per Article 3.6.2 of the ICC Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions, video footage of Irfan’s bowling spells were provided to the Expert Panel of Mark King and Andrea Cutti, who are members of the ICC Panel of Human Movement Specialists, for their analysis and assessment. The assessment revealed that the amount of elbow extension in Irfan’s bowling action was above the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.”
In their last game, USA complained about Afridi’s action to the umpire, alleging chucking, and he was withdrawn before he could complete his spell.
On the batting front, captain Roger Mukasa has so far been silenced, but all hope for Uganda is he shows up when it matters most – today.
All eyes on 2023 World Cup
The 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Three is an international cricket tournament that is currently taking place in Oman between 9 and 19 November 2018. It forms part of the 2017–22 cycle of the World Cricket League (WCL) which determines the qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
The top two teams will be promoted to the 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two tournament, and the other four teams will play in the 2019–21 ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League.
The 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two is scheduled to take place in April 2019 in Namibia.
Six teams will qualify for the tournament:

➡Hong Kong (10th in the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier)
➡Canada (3rd in 2018 ICC World Cricket League Division Two)
