Man arrested over alleged murder of Kakumiro businesswoman

Kakumiro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Kakumiro district has arrested a 38-year-old man for allegedly hacking to death a businesswoman. The suspect is John Tumushabe, a resident of Mukateebe village, Mwitanzige sub-county.

It is alleged that Tumushabe with others still at large on Tuesday morning at around 3am, raided the home of Lillian Tugume Nalongo, 40, a resident of Mukatebe village in the same sub-county and hacked her to death.

Nalongo’s body was found lying in a pool of blood inside her house by residents on Tuesday morning. The assailants allegedly hacked her severally in the neck killing her instantly.

The motive of the attack on Nalongo who has been operating a restaurant in the same trading centre is not yet known.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson says they have arrested Tumushabe to help police with investigations following Nalongo’s death.

He was arrested on Tuesday evening from a nearby bush where he was found hiding after a search by both the police and residents.

According to Hakiza, Tumushabe is believed to be the prime suspect in the murder of Nalongo. He is currently being detained on murder charges as the hunt for his accomplices is ongoing.

Frank Ombaire, the Mwintanzige sub county LC3 chairperson has applauded police for the efforts made to have the suspect arrested.
