Man arrested over murder of his 71 year old mother

Agago, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Agago district have arrested a 32-year-old man over the death of his 71-year-old mother.

The suspect is Daniel Odera, a resident of Bunga village in Atut Parish in Kuywee sub-county.

It’s reported that Odera kicked his mother identified as Theresa Amony in the stomach on Wednesday.

According to statements made by one Aldo Otto, to the police at Kalongo police station, the suspect accused his mother of being against his relationship with his wife.

Otto noted that the suspect became angry on the fateful day leading to the assault after his mother reportedly cursed him if he proceeds with the relationship.

He told the police that shortly after being assaulted by the son, Amony who was in serious pain decided to take a rest in her house but was later found dead at about 6 pm.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the police have detained Odera along with his 27-year-old wife Grace Atim at Kalongo police station.

Okema says the suspects will be charged with murder once the investigation into the case has been completed.

He said that the crime scene was yesterday visited by the officer-in-charge of Kalongo police station adding that the deceased body was taken to Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Hospital Kalongo pending postmortem.

A case of murder has been registered under ref: 22/01/04/2021 at Kalongo police station.

Murder cases have been on the rise in Acholi sub-region this year.

More than 30 people have so far been murdered in the region between January to March this year with Agago district having the bulk of the cases.  The cases according to police reports are linked to assault, land conflicts, mob justice, and domestic violence.
