Maracha district allocates UGX 6 million to revive grounded ambulance

Maracha, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Maracha district local government has finally allocated over 6 million Shillings to revive operations of the only ambulance that was grounded three months ago due to lack of fuel.

The ambulance services came to a standstill after the only non-governmental organization, AVSI that had been helping to fuel it ended its services in the district, creating an uproar among locals in February this year.

The ambulance was donated more than six years ago by Belgian Technical Cooperation-BTC to help in referring emergency cases to Maracha hospital from the lower health units with the support of AVSI that fueled it. But after several months of locals using private means to transport their referred sick ones, the district council managed to look for funds from a conditional grant to fuel the ambulance.

Wilson Geriga, the vice LC 5 chairman Maracha district said they cannot end their five-year term without reviving the ambulance services.

Francis Govule, the chairperson for social services Maracha district local government said they took the decision for the allocation in order to boost and supplement the effort of the NGOs in the sector.

Similarly, Bosco Asea, the secretary for social service says with the committee move to allocate money for the ambulance, there is no more worry in managing the ambulance services in the district.

But Grace Bileru, the female councilor representing Nyadri and Maracha town council says she is happy for the move to revive the ambulance services adding that mothers should take up and use the services to avoid maternal and child deaths.

The only ambulance which still remains parked at the hospital is now expected to resume operations when the new financial year 2021/2022 begins on July 1st 2021.
