Maracha, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Sixteen staff of Maracha District Local Government risk being removed from the payroll after they failed to show up for the recently concluded validation exercise.
Among those who missed the validation exercise that took place between 7th-15th June 2023 include, 12 education assistants, two Local Council III chairpersons, a laboratory technician, and a senior education assistant.
In a letter addressed to the affected civil servants, Chief Administrative Officer Paul Walakira tasked the affected staff to provide a written satisfactory explanation of why they failed to show up for the validation exercise.
“Reference is made to the just concluded special audit of the salary payroll for Maracha district local government for the period 1st July 209 to 28th June 2023. the draft report (Management letter) has revealed that you never appeared for the validation exercise for Maracha district local government”, reads part of the letter.
According to Walakira, his office will not hesitate to delete the names of affected staff from the payroll as he awaits their explanation for skipping the special audit.
“This letter is, therefore, to request you to provide a written satisfactory explanation of why you failed to show up for the validation /headcount, and as I wait for your response, you are informed that your name shall be deactivated from payroll”, Walakira said.
Henry Orijabo, the Local Council III chairperson of Maracha Town Council who is among those affected, declined to comment on the matter when contacted by URN noting that he is still consulting other people before he can decide on the next move.
In a circular to all accounting officers in July 2023, the Ministry of Finance Permanent Secretary Ramathan Ggoobi directed government ministries, departments, and agencies to delete all unverified civil servants from the payroll not later than July 30, 2023.
The office of the Auditor General in May 2023, launched a head count of all civil servants in the entire country in an effort to clean the government payroll. It came after reports of loss of colossal sums of money due to mismanagement.
